Removing temporary files from your computer can help free up disk space and potentially speed up your system. Here’s how to remove temporary files on both Windows and macOS systems:

    For Windows Users

    Using the Disk Cleanup Tool:

    1. Search for Disk Cleanup: Press the Windows key, type “Disk Cleanup”, and press Enter.
    2. Select the Drive: If prompted, choose the drive you want to clean up (usually C: drive) and click OK.
    3. Choose Files to Delete: The tool will scan for temporary files. Check the boxes next to “Temporary files” and any other categories you wish to clean, such as “Recycle Bin” or “Temporary Internet Files”.
    4. Click OK: Press OK to clean up the selected files and then confirm the deletion when prompted.

    Using Settings:

    1. Open Settings: Press the Windows key + I to open Settings.
    2. Go to System: Click on “System”, then select “Storage”.
    3. Manage Temporary Files: Under the “Local Disk” section, click on “Temporary files”. Windows will take a moment to calculate how much space you can free up.
    4. Select and Remove: Choose the temporary files you want to delete (including temporary files, downloads folder, recycle bin, etc.), then click “Remove files”.

    For macOS Users

    Using Finder:

    1. Open Finder: Click on Finder to open a new window.
    2. Go to Folder: In the menu bar at the top, click “Go” and select “Go to Folder”.
    3. Enter Path: Type in ~/Library/Caches and press Enter to navigate to the caches folder. Here, you can manually delete cache folders or files from different applications.

Note: Be cautious about what you delete. If unsure, consider deleting only the contents inside each app’s folder, not the folder itself.

    Using Storage Management:

    1. Open About This Mac: Click on the Apple icon in the upper left corner of your screen, and select “About This Mac”.
    2. Manage Storage: Navigate to the “Storage” tab and click “Manage…”.
    3. Optimize Storage: Here, you can review recommendations for optimizing your storage, which may include emptying the trash, reviewing large files, and removing iOS backups and cache files.

Using Third-Party Cleaning Apps: There are also third-party applications for both Windows and macOS that can help clean temporary files and other unwanted data. Some popular options include CCleaner (for both Windows and macOS), CleanMyMac, and OnyX (for macOS). Be cautious when selecting third-party software; ensure it is reputable and trusted by reviewing user feedback and security features.

Important: Always make sure you have backups of your important data before deleting files, especially when clearing cache or temporary files manually. It ensures you don’t accidentally lose important data.

After years of paying for Norton Utilities, I was introduced to a similar service that has a FREE version – Glary Utilities. The new version of Glary Utilities 6 offers a variety of tools that keep your PC health in good order. They also offer a premium version at a fair price, but the free version is all most users would ever need.
